Dan Palmer
IPPFA
Dan completed 31 years of service to the Bartlett Police Department which began in 1979. His service included 17-years as the Chief of Police accomplishing such milestones as having the department professionally accredited and remaining so through an additional 4 reaccreditations. Always emphasizing training and education, Bartlett was among the leaders in this area with each officer receiving an average of over 100 hours of training per year. During his tenure, the department grew to include 73 total employees (56 sworn officers) serving a community of about 41,000 residents.
In retirement, he is fond of saying that he does 10 different things, only 3 of which he is paid for. The other things are community service and volunteer related. Two of those volunteer positions include working with IPPFA and serving as the Bartlett Police Pension Fund President. He believes it is important for all pension fund members to be involved during their time working as well as in retirement. This includes both financially and politically. Yes, politically. Not in the traditional sense, rather, but as an advocate for hard earned benefits. There are those who believe that they can first underfund your pension and then eliminate the bill when it comes due through elimination of earned benefits. Dan believes every pension member must be an advocate for their future. You can accomplish this through each personal contact you make throughout your life and career.
Dan's other volunteer activities include Chamber of Commerce, Lions Club, his homeowner's association contract officer, the Elgin High School Class of '76 Reunion/activity committee and the Village of Bartlett's Bike and Run Commission. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Criminal Justice Management from Aurora University and a Master of Business degree from the Keller Graduate School of Management. Dan and his wife Lori have 3 adult children.
